2020 ILLW NEWS (REMINDER, COVID-19 and the ILLW)[edited]. The following
was posted on the ILLW Web (https://illw.net/): "Please note that the
ILLW (International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend) for 2020 will NOT be
canceled due to the impact of the Corona virus. Participation will be
the decision of each entrant depending on their own circumstances and
Government rulings regarding border and national parks closures and social
contact etc."
The 23rd ILLW will be held between 0001 UTC, August 22nd, to 2400 UTC,
August 23rd, 2020 (48 hours). As of August 16th, there are 314 entrants

3Z1920/HF1920/SN1920/SO1920/SP1920/SQ1920, POLAND (Special Event). Look

the second Silesian Uprising of 100 years ago (August 19-25th, 1920). For

5E7, MOROCCO (Special Event). Members of the Association Royale des Radio-
Amateurs du Maroc will be active using the special prefix 5E7 between
August 17-31st. Activity is to celebrate the 67th anniversary of the
Fête La Révolution du Roi et du Peuple -- Revolution of the King and
the People in Morocco (August 20th, 1953).
5Z, KENYA. Andy, 5Z4/G3AB, who has been based/resides in Nairobi (been
there since September 30th, 2019)[WW Loc. KI88jr], is now active as 5Z4VJ
(he states on August 12th). He made 55k + QSOs as 5Z4/G3AB. Activity is
on various HF bands using an IC-7300 and KX3, Hexbeam and vertical wire
antennas. No antennas for 160m (restricted space). Station is located in
a city apartment with high, intermittent local noise levels, so please be

5Z, KENYA. Jack, ZS5J, reports on QRZ.com: "After a long wait - I have
been living and working in Kenya for 3 years, I finally received approval
for a full Kenya callsign - 5Z4J. My home callsign is ZS5J (South Africa),
and my other callsigns allocated to me are C91J (Mozambique), A25J (Bot-
swana) and 7P8/ZS5J (Lesotho). At this stage I will only be confirming
QSOs with LoTW. But please be patient - I received my Kenya local license
today (14 August 20), so I still have to bother the ARRL to get this new
callsign registered on LoTW." Jack mentions that most of his ham equip-
ment is too big to transport to Kenya, so they remain at home in South
Africa. He currently has the following gear with him in Kenya:

8A62, INDONESIA (Special Event). Look for special event station 8A62BALI
to be active between August 21-23rd. Activity is to celebrate 62nd anni-
versary of the Bali Province. It is suggested to watch the following
frequencies on the following days:
August 21st -- 2 meters (145.550 MHz)
August 22nd -- 80 meters (3.870 MHz)
August 23rd -- 40 meters (7.135 MHz)

9M63, WEST MALAYSIA. (Special Event). Radio amateurs from Kangar, Perlis,
West Malaysia, will be active with the special callsign 9M63MR to celebrate
the 63rd Malaysian Independence Day. Activity will be on various HF bands

AU2, INDIA (Special Event). Members of the Indian Academy of Communication

E5, NORTH COOK ISLANDS. Warwick, E51WL, has return to Penrhyn Atoll (July
28th) and is back on the air after being in New Zealand (left July 25th).
He was heard this past week on 20 meters FT8/FT4 (as early as 1900z and
as late as 0500z). Warwick mentions that he now has a 2m EME amplifier
and an antenna (yet to be installed).
INTREPID-DX GROUP (Press Release-Winners of the 1st Annual Intrepid DX
Group Youth "Dream Rig" Essay Contest, dated August 10th). It brings us
great pleasure to announce the winners of the 1st Annual Youth "Dream Rig"
Essay Contest.
We received over sixty essays from U.S. licensed young amateurs from
all over the world. The essays were unique in thought and very well-
articulated. Extra points were given for proper grammar, punctuation and
spelling. Most of the essays gave unique perspectives on how to reach
out and connect with the youth of today. We will be sharing those ideas
in subsequent postings.
* First Place winner, and recipient of the ICOM IC-7300 is Faith Hannah
Lea-KD3Z. In addition to winning the IC-7300, Faith Hannah will also
receive a vertical "flagpole" antenna from Greyline Performance
Antennas. She will also receive a Deluxe Headset from Heil Sound and

EU-028. Members of the ARI Modena radio club will be active as IA5MO
from Giglio Island (IIA T002, WLOTA N. 0564, WAIP GR), Italy,
between September 3-8th. Activity will be on various HF bands
using CW, SSB, RTTY and the Digital modes. QSL via IK4RLM,

EU-064. Patrice, F6GCP, will once again be active as F6GCP/P from
Noirmoutier Island between August 23rd and September 5th.
Activity will be holiday style on 40/30/20 meters using mainly
CW (some FT8/PSK31/PSK63) with 100w and an Elevated Vertical.

EU-125. Mike, DG5LAC, will be active as OZ/DG5LAC from Romo Island,
Denmark, between August 22nd and September 5th. Activity will
be on various HF bands using SSB and FT8/FT4. QSL via DG5LAC

NA-134. Bo, OZ1DJJ, will once again be active as OX3LX from Asiaat,
Uummanaq and Upernavik Islands (WW Loc. GP38NQ, GQ30WQ and
GQ12WS), Greenland, between August 24th and September 20th.
Dates can be changed; watch QRZ.com. Activity will be on 40-4
meters with a focus 50 and 70 MHz. When not active, he will
run a WSPR beacon on 40-6 meters. He states this is NOT a
DXpedition, and the best chance to work him will be around
lunchtime and after dinner (his local time UTC-2), also during
the weekend, possibly at night/morning. QSL via OZ0J direct

NA-142. John, N9EAJ, will activate this IOTA group between August
20-25th (with perhaps overlapping days on either end). Activity
will be holiday style. He states [edited] that he will be
"staying at the Destin West RV Resort which is located on
Okaloosa Island. Hopefully I will be able to set up my CrankIR
and run 500 watts from the motorhome, but many RV parks are
not very 'ham radio friendly' - especially so, these kind. I
will not be able to 'hide' the antenna amongst a bunch of trees
because there are none - the antenna will be very visible....
if there are problems operating from the park I will do my best
to get out and operate from other locations on the island or
perhaps Santa Rosa Island which is connected to Okaloosa and
also NA-142. There are many miles of undeveloped beachfront
in this area - I should be able to find places to operate! I
will be operating mostly ssb. As much as I love cw in recent
years I have been having a really hard time pulling out in-
dividual callsigns from a pilup - and the condition isn't
getting any better the older I get! If I try cw it will most
likely be split. With the Crank IR I should be able to operate
on 40 through 10 meters. 60 meters and FT8 are not options at
this time so please don't bother to ask. I will post my logs
to LoTW after my return to WI and ClubLog hopefully from the
island. Depends on internet access at the resort." QSL via

OC-228. Andy, VK5MAV, posted the following on FaceBook this past
week: "Well - another chance for someone :-)
If you have not yet worked IOTA OC-228 [Granite Island], a
new chance appears. On August 22nd or 23rd, I will be on the
island. What day - depends on the weather, it will be clear
in a couple of days before and I let you know. Access to the
island by the bridge is closed in case of strong winds, and
to sit in the rain with all the hardware somehow does not
attract me. Alas, again 100 W from the battery, again GP,
again 20 m band only, again CW only.
I will move around 14042, depending on the situation on the
air. Time is scheduled from around 0 GMT until our twilight,
7 GMT. I will be on the internet all the time, email, watching
DX Summit cluster, phone, Skype, Facebook, but I will upload
the log only after the end of this disgrace.

LOTW NEWS (Help Support Logbook of the World!). From the ARRL Development
Department: Since 2003, Logbook of The World has provided amateur radio
operators with a quick, simple way to claim and verify contacts. This
verification formerly required exchange of paper QSL cards and submission
of a paper application to ARRL - a slow, environmentally unfriendly, and
somewhat expensive process. Using LoTW today, some digital contacts get
confirmed within minutes of when they conclude.
Because ARRL wants there to be no barriers to stations uploading their
QSOs, LoTW is available to any amateur radio operator at no cost to the
user. However, there are costs incurred by ARRL for Logbook operations run
by ARRL staff members including costs for programmers, equipment, web
access, and user help and support.
The future of LoTW!

ARRL Headquarters staff works with a permanent committee to oversee,
maintain, and improve LoTW. Some notable achievements and goals that
have resulted from this work include:
* Continuous reviewing and updating of Logbook processes to facilitate
ease of use
* Adding new ARRL awards as well as awards from other organizations
* Enhancing DX registration through supporting email methods
* Adding support for multiple locations within a single upload, which
supports the rover and mobile communities
* Future growth including a redesign of Logbook's web presence

OJ0, MARKET REEF. Henri, OH3JR, is once again active as OJ0JR from Market
Reef (EU-053) until August 21st. Activity will be limited to his free
time because he helps with maintenance of lighthouse while there. Look

PJ4, BONAIRE (Special Event/Award). The following was posted on QRZ.com
on August 9th [edited]: PJ4TEN is a special event station active during
October 2020 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of "10/10/10" - October
10th, 2010. On that date the former country of the Netherlands Antilles
was dissolved and Bonaire became a 'special municipality' of the Nether-
lands. As a result, Bonaire became a new DXCC entity on that date.
To mark the 10th anniversary, Bonaire's radio amateurs are organizing
a month-long operating event. A PDF award will be available to those who
achieve 10 points by making contacts with PJ4 stations during October.
Rules:
1. A total of 10 points are required.
2. A contact with PJ4TEN is worth 2 points.
3. A contact with any other PJ4 station is worth 1 point.
4. Exception: on the exact anniversary, between 0000UTC and 2359UTC on
Saturday October 10th, all PJ4 stations count 2 points.
5. All stations may be worked more than once on different bands and/or
modes for additional points. Example: QSOs with PJ4TEN on 14 MHz SSB
and 7 MHz FT8, and with PJ4NX on 14 MHz CW and 7 MHz FT8, would count
a total of 6 points (2+2+1+1). However, if all those QSOs took place
on 10/10/20 a total of 8 points would be scored (2+2+2+2).
6. Only contacts made between 0000 UTC on October 1st and 2359 UTC on
October 31st count towards the Bonaire 10/10/10 Award.
7. There is no fee and no QSLs are required.
8. To apply: send a list of contacts made, stating the date, time (UTC),
band and mode to: pj4ten@gmail.com
9. The award is also available to SWLs on a 'heard' basis. For each
contact logged, please list at least two stations with which the
PJ4 station was in contact.

QSO TODAY VIRTUAL HAM EXPO (A Big Hit!). It would seem that the QSO Today
Virtual Ham Expo held on August 8-9th, was a big success with over 26,000
registered and over 14,000 on the platform both days. The Virtual Ham Expo
Chairman Eric Guth, 4Z1UG/WA6IGR, told the ARRL, "It was far better than
we expected" and the event sponsors and exhibitors that he has heard from
so far "are thrilled with the turnout, engagement, and responses that they
received." He said they're also enthusiastic about the second QSO Today
Virtual Ham Expo, set for March 13-14th, 2021. "Our plan is to offer this

RSGB 2020 CONVENTION (Will Be Online). In response to the UK's continuing
social distancing regulations, the RSGB Convention Committee has changed
the arrangements for this year's event and is holding an online Convention
on Saturday, October 10th. For complete details, see:

T45, CUBA. Look for the special callsign T45FM to be active from the
Punta Maya Lighthouse (NA-015, ILLW CU0005, ARLHS CUB032) during the
International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend [ILLW] (August 21-23rd).
Activity will be on 160-10 meters using mainly SSB and FT8. Paper QSL
only via RW6HS.
TT8, CHAD (Postponed Again). The Italian Dxpedition Team, who was expected
to be active as TT8RR and TT8XX from the Capital City Ndjamena between
September 29th and October 12th, have announced that their DXpedition
has been "postponed to next year, Covid-19 situation permitting." For

XT2, BURKINA FASO. Max, DK1MAX, who was expected to once again be active
as XT2MAX from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, sometime during November/December.
has posted the following on QRZ.com [edited]: "Due to the current travel
limitations I decided to delay my planned XT2MAX 2020 activity until
sometime in 2021."
YN, NICARAGUA. Robert, DL7VOA, who was expected to be active as YN5AO from
Casa Guacalito, Guacalito de la Isla (WW Loc. EK61xi), Rivas, Nicaragua,
between November 21st and December 5th, and be an entry in the CQWW DX CW
Contest, has announced that he has postponed his trip until 2021.
